I am a military brat that has lived around bases all my life. I even now live around one of the biggest Army bases out there. My family all works on this base and we have a lot of military friends.

When I was 19 I thought about joining the Air Force. One of the reasons I didn't was because I had this big fear of what happened during Basic Training. No one really talked about it and what the movies showed freaked me out. That being said I have always been the curious one on what happens during that time. Now we have a SGT in the Army that has published his Basic Training Journal so we can all know first hand what he went through.

I read this book in a matter of hours. I didn't want to put it down because I honestly had to know what happened during this time. This book is very informative. It is a journal so don't expect it to read like a normal book. The Author of this Journal gave us a inside look at what he experienced during his time at Basic Training. Something most soldiers or at least none that I have met talk about even when asked. You get to learn some of the Military talk that you sometimes hear on TV such as "being smoked" or "BCG's" (Birth control glasses). You see what they went through to learn what they know and to become the soldiers that some of us see everyday.

Being a soldier is not a simple thing to become. You must go through some hard days before you get that reward of calling yourself a "Soilder". During the Authors time he experienced a lot of things from the normal training they go through to people going "AWOL", people dropping out, and people threatening some crazy stuff. These soldiers go through a lot and this book shows that not all make it to the other side.

"Remember: This is not a sprint, it's a marathon."

I honestly enjoyed this book. I loved learning about the things I always wanted to know. I look at Soldiers differently now. They have to learn to be where they are now. It's not a simple task and is one that everyone earns. They have to remember so many things and have to pass PT tests and get themselves in shape. They also have to learn how to shoot a gun and how to take care of it. The list of what these Soldiers has to learn seems to be endless. Just because you make it to the last day of Basic Training does not mean you will graduate and become the Soldier everyone worked towards. I would love for a Journal about AIT or even one of the first year of a soldier.

Becoming PVT Harmon My Journal from Army Basic Combat Training Casey Sean Harmon 9781491215838 Books Reviews

I'd like to thank the Harmon family for their dedicated service to our country. It is a very good look into the life of a soldier especially in these times where things are not what they seem. It is candid and a short enough read to make it very enjoyable. Thanks for keeping a journal. I know how basic training was in the 1970's and a lot has changed. God Bless and thanks for a fun read.
Becoming PVT Harmon My Journal from Army Basic Combat Training
This was an amazing read. I'm an Air Force brat and I found Casey's story inspirational. To see what our young men and women go through to become a soldier was informational. I feel Becoming PVT Harmon is a book that all young adults (in high school and college) should read. Especially if they are unsure of what they want to do with their lives. Thank you Casey for sharing your experience and feelings with us. If you want to know what it's like to become a soldier than Becoming PVT Harmon is the perfect book to read.
From the first page until the very last I couldn't put the book down. I hung on to every word constantly beseiging my husband with questions on the terminology used. I felt as though I was able to understand exactly what he'd endured himself 14 years ago thanks to 'becoming PVT Harmon' I laughed hysterically at the dummy being thrown from the tower and the poor soldier taking hormone medication. But found I was disappointed when I'd finished the last page. I wanted more. Its not often a good book does that for me.
I'm delighted to say this is a brilliant read. Well worth the time. Its funny and often emotional in part but more so its an inside into a world many just do not know, understand or get.
Loved it.
This was a great read! It was an honest and candid view of one soldier's journey through basic training. I truly loved the way that Casey kept his faith in God the whole time, and how he shared the presence of God's love with others by praying with them. I know that he turned out to be a great Chaplain's assistant. It was admirable that he would not swear, (only when he stubbed his toe!) not many men can do that. The journal is completely from the heart and is just an amazing view of something only those who have gone through it can understand. This books is very special and should be given to each person entering the military or those that are considering it. I truly truly enjoyed it. I have true respect and a soft place for Casey for sharing his story and for the honesty it shows. It was a book I couldn't put down. I laughed with him and cried with him and wanted to hug him a few times! Thank you for sharing your amazing and incredible journal with us!
Firstly, I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to (now) Sgt. Harmon and his family for everything they have done and continue to do for us all. It also takes a lot to share something as personal as a journal with the world and I appreciate it.

That being said, this book gives us a small insight as to what is demanded of our military personnel. Not really having any knowledge of the military, I found some of the things these men and women go through to be a bit extreme but I also understand the reasoning behind it all. The writing gives us a raw, behind-the-scenes view of life in the eyes of a civilian turning into a Soldier. As the person holding the pen changes, so does the writing style and the mindset of what is happening. You see bonds being forged between Soldiers and you are exposed to others at their worst possible breaking point. I know the names have been changed and some of the situations have been omitted for content but you still feel all the emotion behind each word. It is a short read, however I still found myself needing to put it down a few times just to let it sink in and not get too overwhelmed.

I do have a cousin that just started at West Point and I will definitely be buying him his own paperback of this. Be sure to get your copy too!
