Fifty years ago, Mira, humanity’s last hope to find new resources, exited the solar system bound for Proxima Centauri b. Seven years into her mission, all transmissions ceased without warning. Mira and her crew were presumed lost. Humanity, unified during her construction, splintered into insurgency and rebellion. Now, an outpost orbiting Pluto has detected a distress call from an unpowered object entering Sol space Mira has returned. When all attempts at communications fail, S&R Black, a Sol Federation Marine Corps search and rescue vessel, is dispatched from Trident Station to intercept, investigate, and tow the beleaguered Mira to Neptune. As the marines prepare for the journey, uncertainty and conspiracy fomented by Trident Station’s governing AIs, begin to take their toll. Upon reaching Mira, they discover they’ve been sent on a mission that will almost certainly end in catastrophe. The Derelict saga is a suspenseful mashup of hard military sci-fi, space opera, and mystery. Some mysteries shouldn’t be solved.

Derelict Marines Derelict Saga Volume 1 Paul E Cooley Books

A Sci-Fi, Space Opera Saga worth reading. And by that I mean one that a person in the present day can relate to, or read without a scientific background or a PhD in languages.

I've read a LOT of these types of books lately, and while I enjoyed most of them, I was somewhat left feeling lost because there was no pronunciation guide provided. That left me feeling somewhat removed from the story from constantly having to figure out how to pronounce the names/terms presented. NOT SO with this book.

Also, the other BIG thing was,,,EDITING. Wow! What a concept. I am SO glad Cooley took time to have the book edited. It made it so much easier to read not having to wonder if the 3 different names, in 2 pages, were a new character, or the same person.

Some of the characters already have their personality set, but the ones that need to progress/show development, do. And NOT in a stereotypical manner. What's going on? Will the humans figure out what the AI's are trying to accomplish, or will the AI's eventually come out on top? I can't wait to find out.

Having become a fan of his from his more horror slanted novels, I am excited to see where this new venture takes me. The only problem I perceive, is the time I will have to wait for the next book in the series to come out. But I will.

Derelict Marines Derelict Saga Volume 1 Paul E Cooley Books Reviews

Though I enjoy all of Cooley's work, I'm glad he has taken the plunge into Sci-Fi. The genre will benefit from his skill for slowly building a sense of dread, while simultaneously drawing the reader into a believable world (with science that makes sense) filled with authentic characters that behave exactly as they should (especially as the tension ramps up). Being someone who loves Alien and other similar works of Sci-Fi Horror, this is right up my alley. Now where's the next book??
The story itself I found to be well written and very gripping. However, be advised that it makes no attempt to be a stand-alone novel. It doesn't end in a cliffhanger, it merely stops at the height of the action. So before one buys this book, one must understand that one is either committing to buying all the books in the series (however many that may be) or paying for a bad experience. If one likes fairly hard sci-fi and is okay with buying multiple books, I suspect it will be worth the money, but the way it ends really put me off the author's work.

The plotting is pretty good, although it is obviously stretched near to breaking to cover multiple books. Frankly a lot of stuff seemed like filler, but it's at least well written filler. The pacing is slow, slow, slow, but once the protagonists are finally at the derelict, that pace works well. Unfortunately that's at the end of the book. The characters range from barely drawn to well drawn, but overall I was well enough satisfied. There is a bit of character growth; given the extremely slow pacing, it's about as much character growth as could reasonably exist.

The setting in a sci-fi novel is often the main character, and I was moderately impressed. It's a fairly low tech mid-future setting, with mankind limited to our solar system but well spread out within it. No FTL flight, everything is dependent on rocket thrusters using ion drives and thrusters fueled with xenon gas. (Gotta look that up as I'm sure the author had some rationale.) It isn't dystopian, but we certainly see signs of the overly powerful corporations, separatist movements, and abused proletariat common to such work. Even though the action takes place on the far periphery of human society, I had the feeling that the author plans to expand this element. If not, it makes for good character background and motivation.

AI is probably the single most advancement seen, and makes a major part of the plot. We are told early on that the various AIs are conspiring, and we see their actions, but we are left in the dark as to their motivations. As a novel, this is frustrating, but as a serial it probably will work.

Overall, I would easily rate it five stars except that it is not a novel at all; it is merely a chapter. While I understand today's market realities, I also think that an author owes honesty to the reader up front. This is NOT a novel, and it should be advertised as chapter one of a serial. In spite of being mesmerized by it, I highly doubt I will buy the next.
When I received the latest e-mail from ShadowPublications, I was hoping there would be more information about a 4th sequel to the Black, my favorite horror story for at least the past 10 years. However, there was information about Derelict Marines, which I snapped right up. Since that happened, I have not wanted to stop reading it, and am looking forward to any other Derelict related works that may appear.
Bravo Paul Cooley, your transition from horror to science fiction was masterfully done. I love the pace of this gripping adventure, you set your universe up convincingly and I can't wait to see what book two has in store!
Derelict Marines is the first book in a new space marines series by Paul E. Cooley. The same careful attention to technical detail that thrilled readers of his Black series has been applied to the vagaries of interstellar space travel, combat and operations. One of the consistent styles that Cooley applies to his book is the slow burn - a gradual increase in tension and complexity that serves as a simmering literary fuse. The conflict is introduced by peppering seemingly disparate elements throughout the build-up to the explosive climax, where the careful machinations of the plot manifest with such rapidity that it becomes difficult to put the book down.

The book feels a bit like a season of television, with such a delicious cliffhanger at the end, that you can’t wait to see the next season. In this case, it’s the next book in the series, where hopefully some of the burning questions that were carefully introduced will be answered.
